Edwin Cheong is a talented light artist with a diverse portfolio that employs all kinds of interactive LED lighting. Based in Singapore, Cheong is more than just a tinkerer; he holds a Masters in Architecture, lectures about art and design and creates stunning art pieces that often combine environmental, interactive, kinetic and LED light elements. In fact, he is the man behind the 33ft tall 2012 Youth Olympic Games Commemorative Sculpture in Singapore, called Breathe. Installed on the Olympic Walk in Singapore, this kinetic sculpture harvests wind power with its delicate circular pieces, and uses the energy to illuminate LED outdoor lights at night.

One of my favorite installations by Cheong is Positive Attracts. The piece consists of several haunting figures, standing in a cluster. Hidden infrared sensors detect when passersby are close and trigger internal DMX LED lights. The lights ignite, filling the figures with beautiful colors that the artist hopes will fill the viewer with doses of optimism. Each figure is said to represent a different real life “hero”. Quotes at the bases of the sculptures help spectators guess who the sculpture represents.
